Summer Dreaming

"Summer has filled her
veins with light and her
heart is washed with noon."
         ~C. Day Lewis

I always find that summer disappears in a blur. Every day is so full and there is always a list of activities that you want to get to! A trip to the beach, a picnic in the park, saturday morning strolls, an afternoon at the pool, a drive out of town - and then there is the longing for summer rest and relaxation. Before you know it the breezes are cooling and your summer dreams are flitting away with the green of the leaves. I wanted to take advantage of the warmth and the light yesterday so I went outside and took a few impromptu photographs. I don't actually like photographing myself - which is why you rarely see me here on my blog! I hope you enjoy these few dreamy summer garden pictures and that you are making the most of your summer dreams!

Mirror Romance

"Each fairy breath of summer,
as it blows with loveliness, inspires
the blushing rose."
         ~Author Unknown

Summer is rushing by and each day is full of so many activities! We went for tea at my Nana's the other day and she had laid out such beautiful treats! Pastel macarons, belgian chocolates, shortbread, yummy melon balls, and rose petal pink lemonade. It was such a lovely afternoon!
I found a beautiful Venetian vanity mirror this week - it was so gorgeous I couldn't leave it behind! My sister fell instantly in love with it when I showed it to her and it has gone home with her. :) I had to take a few pictures of it first. I think that Venetian mirrors with their unique shapes and beautiful etchings are so glamorous! My Mum also made a spectacular find recently - a pair of stunning small Limoges boudoir lamps. She was very sweet and gave me one of them! I had a pale pink lace scarf which I covered a lampshade with and the lamp now sits on my vanity. I adore it! I hope everyone is enjoying their July!

A Little Romance

"That beautiful season the Summer!
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
And the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."
                ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It is interesting how photographs turn out differently at different times during the day (of course, you are saying, why wouldn't they?!). To my eyes the light seems the same in the morning as it is in the afternoon and yet when I take pictures in the early morning and edit them later they are always covered in a hazy golden glow. I took some pictures the other morning of some treasures in my home and took my time editing them. I like how full of light they are! I like the contrast of soft and bright! I have always loved soft colours in a house - ivory walls, painted or pale wood furniture and vintage crystal. But I am also finding that I like, here and there, to see something a tad richer in hue. A large gold frame, a French chair in it's natural finish, an old-fashioned still-life on a darkened background, or a piece of antique china with bright flowers painted on it. The contrast draws the eye and creates a very romantic atmosphere. Here are a few photos I took in the early morning light in my home with that little touch of romance...

This antique Art Nouveau jewelry box and the Prussian teacup below are both in my Etsy Shop!

Dresser Pots

"And so with the sunshine and
the great bursts of leaves growing
on the trees, just as things grow in
fast movies, I had that familiar
conviction that life was beginning
over again with the summer."
               ~F. Scott Fitzgerald,
                    The Great Gatsby

The roses are finally out in the garden! All of this heat we have been having has coaxed them out. I'm not used to the warm weather - there have definitely been more trips to the store for watermelons, popsicles, and those fabulous little Haagen Daaz mini ice cream cartons lately! The joys of summer!
I wanted to share some photos I took of our collection of dresser pots. I am IN LOVE with antique porcelain dresser pots and powder jars. They are getting very hard to find! Between my Mum and I we barely have half a dozen and we are always searching for more. They remind me of chic ladies sat at their dressing tables draped in satin and lace and a powder puff in their hand. I wonder if they really were filled with powders and creams? I love to keep jewelry and trinkets in them or little flowers. Here are just a few photos of them! I hope everyone is having a happy July!
