The Beauty of Words

"A book is a dream that
you hold in your hand."
            ~Neil Gaiman

I have always loved books. I think everyone in my family does! My Mum and Dad are never without a book and my sister, well she has more bookcases than anyone I have ever known and every special occasion is celebrated with a large parcel of new additions to her collection. I always have a pile in my bedroom that I am making my way through (It never gets smaller!). My Nana gave me some of the books she loved when she was a little girl and I adored them all growing up. Girl's annuals, Grace Harlowe's Sophomore Year at School (my favourite - I read it five times!), Polly, Agatha Christies and so many more! I had copies of The Secret Garden and A Little Princess that I still have today, even though the pages are a little yellowed and the covers are creased. They are treasures! My Grandad had an enormous library and when he and my Nana recently moved into a smaller home the larger portion of his books had to be given away. Some of the books had dates around the 1860's! I had to photograph the few that found their way to my house. The illustrations are so exquisite! Words are beautiful and magical and this post is my little homage to them...

  1. Hi, Jenn: Oh, my. Your books are treasures indeed. In fact, all books are treasures, I think. I enjoy reading books via electronic means, but there's nothing like holding a book and wondering how many hands and thoughts have held that same book and how many imaginations soared until "The End." Then tucking it away amongst your collection, i.e., your home library. Our love affair with books - may it never end!

  2. Your photography of one of my adorations (vintage beautiful books) does them justice. I see one that I will be requesting for my birthday in June. Hard copy is best although, when I read before going to bed, the lightness of the kindle or paperback is nice. I will be re-visiting this post many times for inspirations. Oh, and I wanted to say that the illustration of the cottage midway through this post reminded me of your delightful drawings. It is my favorite style of home, nicer and more magical than Victorian style. Wonderful wonderful post!

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed it Karen! The illustration of the cottage is from a picture I had as a child so I am sure it was an inspiration for me :) Thankyou so much for your lovely words!

  6. What a wonderful post Jennelise....thanks so much for sharing something so close to your heart.. l love all the little excerpts you've placed over the photos especially the paragraph about wanting to be magic, how fantastic that would be. What treasures you have, no computer screen or e-reader could EVER replace the beauty of a book.
