Collections

"The most beautiful thing we can experience
is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art
and all science. He to whom this emotion is a
stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder
and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his
eyes are closed."
                                ~Albert Einstein

There are so many things about life that are mysterious to me! So many things to learn and discover. We are constantly growing up. I learn something new about myself everyday! Something about the things I like, about the way I approach situations, about my feelings, thoughts, and those of everyone around me. We are all so mysterious, and so beautiful. To take a very small example from my life at the moment - My sister is getting married and I am having the WORST time trying to figure out what to give her! You would think I would know her taste having lived with her for the last twenty odd years, but I am learning new things everyday. When people walk into the antique store looking for something to add to their collections I am almost always surprised by what they collect. One lady I remember had nearly a thousand teacups, another collected salt and pepper shakers, one gentleman had an enormous collection of antique and vintage eyewash cups, and our store once purchased a collection of saucers from a lady who owned 18,000. They covered every wall, door, and cupboard in her home! Collections are important and exciting. When I was growing up I collected dolls (among other things). I only have one of those dolls today - the very first I was ever given. Her name is Cecelia Sue. My Mum's collections have greatly influenced my own evolving style over the years. Her treasures have become as precious to me as they are to her, perhaps mostly because they are hers, and they represent a part of her that I love very much. I have taken some pictures of small collections of things in my home for you to see and maybe you will tell me a little about what you love to collect! Also included is a brand new picture I drew recently. Enjoy!

  3. J,

Did you realize you still have word verification turned on?

It may be costing you comments, people just hate it. Just thought I would let you know in case you weren't aware.

    Hugs.

    1. Hi Michele! Thankyou for your suggestion! I have linked up with Pink Saturday :) I didn't even realize that you could turn the word verification off! I find it very annoying myself. Thankyou again! Take care!

  4. You always show us such pretty things; feminine, girly, lovely things. I guess, for me, my tastes have changed a lot over the years; fickle. Consistently, I've collected Christmas ornaments since I was a teen and I've vowed to start downsizing in the coming year (because I'm no longer into wood/handcrafts of the 1970s, or the animal characters from my 1980s as I'm now into glass pastels/sparkles). I love the detail on the silkstone Barbie dolls being manufactured by Mattel Toys for the adult collector (Barbie Fashion Model collection). I enjoy collecting hardcover books as if I'm afraid they will all be replaced by Kindles. My mom has collected enough vintage china for both of us. I have an acquaintance who collects antique French shopping carts but I'm afraid I don't really even know what those are. A neighbor collects rhinestone costume jewelry from the 1930s-1940s. A work friend only collects tiny ceramic green frogs. There was a TV special here in the U.S. about Candy Spelling, widow of an American TV producer, who had an extensive collection of I believe Madame Alexander dolls. I have another neighbor who collects antique clocks. I have to enter his home with hands-over-ears because the loud ticking drives me to insanity (I have no idea how he possibly sleeps at night!).

    1. Thankyou Vicki - you always have such lovely things to say! It is so interesting to hear about how people's tastes and styles have evolved and come into being. Everyone is so unique! What appeals to one person can be so personal and based in past experiences. Thankyou for your constant support and encouragement!

  5. This is just so beautiful, it makes my heart sing, inspires and I remember a beauty I may have forgotten. The silk roses in the ornate frame is divine, I may need to begin a collection with them! Thank you.

  12. Jennelise, why can't your special, unique wedding gift to your sister and her husband, be a series of original drawings...from you! You're a professional artist; people buy your work. Who wouldn't LOVE to receive some of your art??!! Pick a theme she'd like, expand on it; she could display them as a group across a wall. I have some handmade things my brother made--a gorgeous, inlaid wood chessboard is one; another is a deep, burnished wooden bowl which I've displayed red wooden apples in (although, in these years, I'm not so much into wood "accent" decor as I am crystal or other decorative glass, etc., but this never takes away my love for the pieces he made for me, and I do display them periodically...that's the thing about collections, when you have a lot of "stuff:" the option to rotate the items and then love them/rediscover them anew). If you do know your sister's tastes, and how she will most likely decorate her new digs as a married lady, you'll probably help her a lot when she puts together her "nest" because the gift of your art will help her accessorize. Another idea is your photography. You take absolutely gorgeous photos. You could also give her a photo series, based on a subject she might love or that would be appealing to both her and her husband. My own husband is a photographer by trade (earlier in his life) and we furnished our first home with his wonderful landscapes (Ansel Adams-ish), or even of flowers in our yard ("Georgia O'Keefe"-inspired). (When I'd gone thru a "blue" phase, I decorated with mirrors, silver, ice blue and black&white photos; I liked it for awhile!) You can blow up a photo to, say an 11"x14" size for framing and create a nice photo "collage" on a wall or favorite nook. (Of course, you can have a photo enlarged even more, and one large photo can be quite a conversation piece in a room.) I speak solely as an amateur! I came back to leave a second comment (thanks for replying to my first one!) because I just read an article about weddings on my home page and couldn't help but think of you! It was talking about how often (rare, apparently!) a bridesmaid ever wears her bridesmaid dress post-wedding, and what the average cost of one is; what percentage of wedding receptions take place outdoors; how many brides actually wear a veil, etc. I think we'll see more and more features in print and online about weddings as we approach June. ('Tis the season...)

    1. I have thought that a couple drawings would be nice for my sister - it's deciding what sort of picture she would appreciate that is hard! Photos are lovely too - we have been working on getting all of our photos developed lately (and there are hundreds). It's been very fun and we're not quite finished yet! I am also enjoying browsing through wedding sites, blogs, and magazines lately too! So many ideas and so much to decide! I'm sure there will be posts very soon asking for everyone's ideas :) Thanks Vicki! Take care!

  13. So beautiful, dear Jennelise...
I second Vicki's idea re: gifting your artwork for your sister's wedding! Very meaningful and exquisite..
But I can see how you would want it to be "just the right one"!
I am still seeking out the perfect frame for your print. Trying to choose between antiqued gold or silver.
I want it on my wall already :))
